The only lodging available in the Tsunogami hot spring area is Hotel Tsunogami, located within the Tsunogami Village. The hot spring is located in the Oku-Aga region of Aga Town, and the lodge that appears after passing through the mountain road is truly a place worthy of being called a hidden hot spring. Hotel Tsunogami, the only lodging where you can enter the Tsunogami hot spring, offers multiple hot springs, including a private bath with 100% natural hot spring water that is not heated and an open-air bath where you can enjoy the nature of Oku-Aga. The low-tonicity weak alkaline hot spring has effects on arteriosclerosis and cuts, among other things.
ポイント 2

Experience the Quiet and Rustic Nature at a Remote Hot Spring

In Oku-Aga, you can feel the original scenery of Japan that remains because it's far away from civilization, just like the Ageno River Gorge, which was selected as one of Japan's top 100 scenic spots. Especially at Kakugami Onsen, it's surrounded by natural mountains that have been untouched by human hands. These mountains change their appearance completely depending on the season. In spring and autumn, they become a colorful and vibrant landscape, while in winter, they show a beautiful black and white contrast, like an ink painting, with snow piled up. It's a hot spring that you'll want to visit in every season, not just once.
ポイント 3

Near Kakojin Hot Springs, there is Kakojin Lake Youth Travel Village, where cooking facilities and barbecue areas are scattered around the lake. Visitors may be surprised to suddenly come across several cottages while walking along the mountain path. Why not enjoy a barbecue here while taking in the natural breeze before or after visiting Kakojin Hot Springs? Necessary barbecue equipment can be rented here, making it easy to enjoy with just bringing your own ingredients.
ポイント 4

Experience a Hot Red-Brown Spring in a Quiet Forest

Near the Kakugami Onsen, there is a day-use bathing facility owned by Aga Town called "Kanose Onsen Akayu." The hot spring, which is about 58℃ and infused with medicinal properties, warms and heals the body from the core. The red-brown color of the spring is evidence of the abundant iron content, which is effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, and more. It's a hidden hot spring in the mountains that only those in the know would want to repeat visiting again and again.
ポイント 5

The Traditional Local Event "Tsugawa Fox's Wedding Procession"

Kakugamionsen The Traditional Local Event "Tsugawa Fox's Wedding Procession"
It is believed that foxes have lived on Kirin Mountain in Tsugawa since ancient times, and their foxfires are said to be the most beautiful in the world. It is said that humans have also witnessed the fox's wedding procession. The fox's wedding procession took place at night, with lanterns hanging down in the dark. These lanterns and foxfires were the symbols of the fox's wedding, and the legend has been passed down from parents to children and grandchildren. In order to pass on this cultural tradition of the fox's wedding as a part of the local culture, the fox's wedding procession is held every autumn. It is a great opportunity to see a traditional local event that has become rare in Japan, and to learn more about Japan.

Sightseeing

Kakugamionsen The Beauty of Oku-Aga's Valley, Chosen as One of Japan's Top 100 Scenic Spots
The Beauty of Oku-Aga's Valley, Chosen as One of Japan's Top 100 Scenic Spots
Kakugami Onsen is located within the vast resort area of "Kakugami Village," which covers 120,000 tsubo (approximately 396,000 square meters). Here, you can experience the natural beauty of the Agano River basin, which has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 scenic spots, by taking a sightseeing boat on the first-class river, the Agano River, which shows various expressions throughout the four seasons. The valley beauty is also stunning during the summer's fresh greenery and autumn's foliage, but it's even more recommended to enjoy the snow scenery like a sumi-e ink painting in the winter of Oku-Aga. In addition, there is a private ski resort called "Kakugami Ski Resort" within the resort area, so you can also heal your tired body after moving around on the slopes.

History

Kakugamionsen A Village Where the Cultures of Niigata and Fukushima Intersect
A Village Where the Cultures of Niigata and Fukushima Intersect
The area where Kakugan Onsen is located is known as "Oku-Aga" in Niigata Prefecture, and is situated on the border between Niigata and Fukushima prefectures. In 2005, four towns and villages, Tsugawa-cho, Kase-cho, Mikawa-mura, and Kamikawa-mura, were newly merged to form "Aga-cho" today. Since it was under the control of the Aizu clan until the Edo period, it has inherited a unique culture that mixes the cultures of both Niigata and Fukushima. Currently, the SL Banetsu Monogatari (C57) line, which connects Niigata and Fukushima, is still in operation, and many people from both outside Niigata and Fukushima come to see its beautiful natural scenery.

Access

Accessible from both Niigata and Fukushima
If you're driving from Tokyo, enter Niigata Prefecture from the Kanetsu Expressway and continue on the Ban-etsu Expressway. It takes about 3 and a half hours from central Tokyo to Niigata Chuo IC, and then another hour from there via Tsugawa IC on the Ban-etsu Expressway to Kakugan Onsen. If you're driving from the Tohoku region, take the Tohoku Expressway and transfer to the Ban-etsu Expressway at Koriyama JCT. From there, you can go via Tsugawa IC. It takes about 3 hours from downtown Sendai. If you're taking the train, get off at Kagase Station on the Ban-etsu West Line, regardless of whether you're coming from the Tokyo or Tohoku direction.
