Iwami Tatamigaura is a scenic spot located at the tip of a hill with an elevation of about 50 meters that juts out into the coastline. Tatamigaura is characterized by approximately 25 steep cliffs called "kaishoku" that have been eroded by waves, and about 49,000 strange rocks. It was named after the fact that it looks like tatami mats have been laid out. It is the only spot in the prefecture selected for the "Kaori Scenic 100 Selection" by the Ministry of the Environment and is also designated as a natural monument of the country. The terrain was formed by the uplift of the seabed, and there are strange rocks, kaishoku cliffs, and caves with the sea as a backdrop. The strata from about 16 million years ago contain many fossils such as whale bones and shells.
