The Kawagoe warehouse district is also known as "Koedo Kawagoe" or "Edo's kitchen." During the Edo period, the Kawagoe domain was established and a castle town was formed and developed around Kawagoe Castle. The present buildings are mainly from the Meiji period.
The buildings that remain are mainly from the Meiji period. The Edo period buildings were destroyed by fire in the Great Kawagoe Fire of 1893, but the Osawa family's traditional warehouse-style houses survived the fire. The kura-zukuri is a fireproof construction that can prevent similar fires, and was copied by Kawagoe merchants one after another.
The streets of warehouses with their massive demi-gawara tiles and distinctive Kannon-opening doors have been designated as "Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings" by the national government.
Although the warehouse buildings are a magnificent sight, the main street around the Nakamachi intersection is not suitable for daytime photography or video because of heavy traffic and tourist buses even on weekdays, and also because of the large number of tourists.
There are also kimono rental and sales stores scattered throughout the area, so it is a good idea to walk around wearing a kimono to add to the atmosphere. I think Kawagoe's warehouse rows are a place where you can enjoy all day long❗
