Kasahara-cho, Tajimi City is the birthplace of glazed ceramic mosaic tiles. Here, visitors can experience the fun of tiles at a museum. There is also an experiential workshop where you can create small items using tiles, so please check it out if you are interested.

Mysterious Appearance Reminiscent of "Clay Mountain"

The Tajimi City Mosaic Tile Museum is a museum dedicated to mosaic tiles that opened in 2016. The museum is built on a mortar-shaped site and was designed by the innovative architect Terunobu Fujimori, who is highly regarded worldwide. The museum's design is a symbolic building that evokes a world of fantasy, resembling a mountain from a comic book and modeled after a tile quarry where raw materials are excavated. Its appearance is reminiscent of "Clay Mountain," and it's sure to make you excited even before entering.

Approach to an Enchanting Entrance

Not only is the unique appearance impressive, but the slope and curves of the approach to the entrance are also designed to transport you to another world. The bowl-shaped site has a low entrance, allowing the entire building to be seen naturally and making it easy to take commemorative photos. Descending the gently curving path, you'll find a fairy tale-like entrance that looks like it came straight out of a storybook! Be sure to capture the exterior walls filled with tiles and broken pieces of pottery on camera before passing through the entrance.

Fell in Love with the Mysterious Staircase Encountered after Reception

The Mosaic Tile Museum is a four-story building. After entering through the entrance and completing reception on the first floor, you climb a large staircase all the way up to the fourth floor. From there, you go down one floor at a time using the elevator to view each floor in order. The staircase leading up to the fourth floor, which you encounter immediately upon entering, is one large staircase connecting all the floors. This staircase itself is also one of the attractions, with a stylish design resembling unglazed pottery. As you climb the staircase and look up, the ceiling follows the mysterious line of the building's exterior, giving a sense of mystical beauty. As you follow the route to the fourth floor, try to experience the feeling of becoming a part of the tiles.

Enjoy a Unique Space Surrounded by Tiles

The fourth floor of the museum, which is a semi-rooftop, has a very open space. The walls of the exhibition room are covered with mosaic tiles based on white grain tiles, and you can see valuable tile materials embedded in them. The main focus of the exhibition is on tiles from the Showa period when the local Kasahara tile industry was at its peak, and tiles collected by volunteers from various places in Kasahara Town are mainly displayed. Let's also enjoy the rarity of these tiles.

Not only can you appreciate a variety of tile displays, but as it is a "Tile Museum," you can also learn about the history and manufacturing process through valuable collections on display. Must-See Tourist Spot in Kasahara, the Tile Town!

The Mosaic Tile Museum is open from 9:00 to 17:00 (last admission is 30 minutes before closing) and is closed on Mondays (or the following weekday if it's a national holiday) and from December 29th to January 3rd for the New Year's holiday. The parking lot for regular cars is shared with the public hall and gymnasium, so space is limited. Therefore, it is recommended to use public transportation from the nearest Tajimi Station. If taking the bus, take the East Tetsu Bus Kasahara Line "Higashikusakuchi" or "Hane" from bus stop #2 at "Tajimi Station" and get off at "Mosaic Tile Museum". The travel time from the station is about 17 minutes. The recommended length of stay is 1-2 hours, and if using the experience workshop, it's a good idea to plan for an additional 30 minutes.
