Tairyuji

Tai-Ryu-Ji Temple is the 21st temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, also known as one of the challenging spots called "Henro Korogashi". However, with the opening of the ropeway, even those with weak legs can easily visit. From the ropeway, you can enjoy the view of the Kii Peninsula. There are many historical buildings at Tairyuji Temple. In particular, the main hall is designated as an important cultural property and houses Buddhist statues such as the Eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva and the Thousand-armed Kannon Bodhisattva. There are also many other attractions, such as the Nio statues, said to be the largest and oldest in Tokushima, the "Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove" carved in the Daishido, and "Yamasakimori" by the sculptor Nagare Masayuki. Next to the stamp office is the corridor of the Mochibutsudo, where you can see a powerful dragon ceiling painting, said to be the guardian deity of Tairyuji. There are many hiking trails in the area, allowing you to fully enjoy the natural surroundings. After your hike, you can relax in the Tairyuji Onsen, which features a natural hot spring with water flowing directly from the source. Additionally, the temple is located near the Anan Coast, so you can also take a drive along the coastline and enjoy the beautiful scenery. In the area surrounding Tairyuji Temple, you can enjoy the colorful autumn foliage. Especially recommended is the view of the foliage at Tairyuji Temple seen from the ropeway. The contrast between the red maple leaves and the glowing yellow ginkgo leaves is beautiful, creating an indescribable scene. While it takes time, it's also a great time to hike without taking the ropeway, so please visit while considering your own physical strength and time!

At Tairyuji Temple, you can also visit for New Year's and it's a particularly popular spot for this in Tokushima prefecture. Since it can get quite crowded during the first three days of the year, it might be a good idea to visit a little later if you don't like crowds. If you have amulets or talismans from the previous year, return them and offer a donation. Tairyuji Temple is located in the mountainous area near the sea, so be sure to dress warmly when visiting.
