The Tosa Sunday Market is a historic market that has been held since the third year of the Genroku era (1690) in Kochi. It takes place every Sunday, except during the New Year and Yosakoi Festival periods, in the Otesuji shopping district near Kochi Castle. The market stretches for about 1km and around 300 shops set up from around 6am to 3pm. Not only fresh vegetables and fruits, but also hardware, cutting tools, and plants are sold. This market attracts not only local citizens but also tourists from outside the prefecture, with about 17,000 people gathering in one day. You can get local specialty products and daily necessities in a lively atmosphere. The Tosa Sunday Market is a daily existence for local people as a local living market, and an opportunity for tourists to experience local culture and scenery. 10-Minute Walk from Kochi Station!
Otesuji, where the Sunday Market is held, is located about a 10-minute walk from Kochi Station. If traveling by car, it's recommended to leave early to prepare for traffic and parking congestion. Taking the streetcar to the Sunday Market also adds to the charm of the experience. Purchasing a one-day pass is convenient for transportation after enjoying the market. The Sunday Market in Tosa opens at 5:00 am from April to September and at 5:30 am from October to March. While the market closes in the evening, some shops may close early depending on sales and weather conditions, so it's recommended to visit in the morning.
