Zoo famous for being able to see pandas

The Tokyo Metropolitan Zoo located within Ueno Park. It was the first zoo in Japan, established in 1882 as a facility attached to the museum under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture, Commerce and Industry. Visitors can see various animals such as giant pandas, Asian elephants, and polar bears in the park.

Encounter Numerous Animals that Can Only be Found Here

At Ueno Zoo, several rare animals that can only be seen here in Japan are kept. One of them is the "aye-aye," a primate species that inhabits Madagascar and has even been featured in song lyrics. In the "Aye-aye Forest," where aye-ayes are kept, you can also meet other unique animals that live in Madagascar, such as the white-belted ruffed lemur and the fossa.

In the area that spreads out just inside the main gate, you can observe Japanese endemic species such as Ezo deer and Japanese serow. The animals that are kept here are all precious and rare, even for us who live in Japan and don't often get to see them in our daily lives. The Mascot of Ueno Zoo

The "panda" is a popular mascot at Ueno Zoo. Ueno Zoo was also the first place in Japan to have pandas, and has become a pioneer in breeding them. In September 2020, a new facility called "Panda Forest" opened, where you can enjoy watching the adorable pandas play and move around energetically. At Ueno Zoo, tours are held where you can walk around the park with a guide who has detailed knowledge about the animals. Enjoy Historical Buildings

At Ueno Zoo, which opened in 1882, you can see not only animals but also historically valuable buildings. The former Kan'ei-ji Five-Storied Pagoda, designated as an important cultural property of Japan, and the former main gate, which retains the image of Japanese-style Versailles architecture, are recommended as photo spots. The monkey mountain, where monkeys are kept, is also a valuable presence as the first monkey mountain completed in Japan in 1932.

Access

Excellent Access from Tokyo

There are three entrances to Ueno Zoo, making it convenient to choose the one that suits your transportation needs. If you enter through the main gate, it's a 5-minute walk from JR Ueno Station. If you enter through Benten Gate, it's a 4-minute walk from Keisei Ueno Station. If you enter through Ikenohata Gate, it's a 5-minute walk from Nedu Station on the Tokyo Metro. With all entrances accessible within a 10-minute walk from various train lines, it's a facility that is easy to access from anywhere in Tokyo.

Parking

Use the Large Parking Lots Nearby

As there is no dedicated parking lot at Ueno Zoo, those coming by car will need to use the paid parking lots in the surrounding area. Recommended for their large capacity are the Taito Ward Ueno Chuo-dori Underground Parking Lot, which can accommodate up to 300 cars, and the Ueno Parking Center, which can accommodate up to 400 cars. Both parking lots are within walking distance of the zoo, making them safe and convenient for families with small children or elderly individuals.
