Shofukuji Jizodo

Shofukuji Jizodo is the only wooden national treasure building in Tokyo. Along with Kamakura's Engakuji Shariden, it is considered a representative example of Zen-style architecture. The building features a hipped roof and was constructed in 1407. It is highly valued for its historical significance and is a popular tourist spot for activities such as Tokyo cultural heritage tours and exploring the northern Tama area. At Shofukuji Jizodo, over a thousand small Jizo statues are enshrined. Since the Edo period, it has been a custom to dedicate one statue when a wish is granted, and many people still visit today. There is also a Jizo statue for making wishes on the grounds, where you can borrow a small Jizo statue to make a wish. It is also customary to return the statue when your wish comes true. At Shofukuji Jizodo, the Jizo Festival is held every year on November 3rd. The festival includes the paid distribution of Yakuyoke Kojizo, as well as Gagaku music and the Urayasu dance. On this day, there are particularly many visitors and you can worship over a thousand Kojizo statues all at once.
