History

Former Sakura Clan Samurai Residences Experience the Life of Satsuma Samurai in the Edo Period!
Experience the Life of Satsuma Samurai in the Edo Period!
During the Edo period, the Satsuma clan was established in Sakura, located in the Inba-gun district of Shimousa Province, and a castle town was formed around Sakura Castle. It is said that when Tokugawa Ieyasu ruled Edo, Sakura Castle played an important role in protecting the eastern side of Edo Castle. The samurai residences were the homes of Satsuma samurai, and they worked to defend themselves by creating cliffs behind them, and building earthen embankments and terraced fields on the roadside. In a survey conducted in 1981, 25 samurai residences were discovered, and of the five that still exist today, three (restored after dismantling) can be visited!

About 10 Cars Can Be Parked at the Samurai Residence Parking Lot!
There is a dedicated parking lot near the samurai residence where about 10 cars can be parked for free. However, to get here, you need to drive on narrow roads. If you are coming by a large vehicle such as a bus or if the parking lot is full, park at the parking lot of Sakura Castle Ruins Park and walk over! It takes about 15 minutes on foot, but on the way, you can also pass through the tourist spot "Hiyodori-zaka," so it's a good distance to walk while sightseeing!

If you're coming by train, it's about a 15-minute walk from the nearest station, JR Sakura Station. If you're coming by car, you can get there in about 20 minutes from the Sakura IC.
