Smelt fishing can be enjoyed from early January to mid-February each year when the lake surface freezes. The temperature drops considerably, so it's recommended to dress warmly when visiting.

At the "Okhotsk Squirrel Park" located near Abashiri Lake Hot Springs, you can have a rare experience of encountering adorable squirrels. About 50 squirrels are kept in the park, and it's possible to touch them while wearing gloves. The usage fee is very reasonable at only 370 yen, including equipment rental, making it an attractive point that you can easily play without hesitation.

10 Minutes by Car from JR Abashiri Station

Abashiri Kohan Onsen can be accessed by driving on National Route 39 from JR Abashiri Station, which takes about 10 minutes. There are also hot spring inns within walking distance from JR Yobito Station, the next station after Abashiri Station. If coming from outside the area, the Memanbetsu Airport serves as the gateway. It's a 15-minute drive from the airport by car, and rental cars are available in the vicinity of the airport. During peak tourist seasons such as summer, it's recommended to make reservations in advance due to congestion.
