Iwakuni White Snake Shrine

Iwakuni Hakujya Shrine, located in a residential area, is a small shrine with a striking white torii gate. The white snake, said to be the incarnation of a god, has been cherished as a very auspicious creature, known to locals as "Shirohebi-san" and also said to be the messenger of the god of wealth, Benzaiten. This shrine, which is said to bring blessings such as increased wealth, prosperous business, and good health and longevity, has become famous in recent years as a power spot, attracting many visitors.

When entering a shrine, one is sure to notice a pair of komainu (guardian dogs) standing on either side of the approach, alongside the torii gate. These komainu are commonly seen at shrines and are said to ward off evil spirits. However, at Iwakuni Hakujashin Shrine, located on either side of the white torii gate, are not komainu, but "shirohebi" (white snakes) carved into stone lanterns! This unique feature is due to the shrine's dedication to the sacred white snake. It's rare to find a shrine that uses shirohebi motifs instead of komainu nationwide, so why not make a visit to this shrine and enjoy this unique sight?

At Iwakuni White Snake Shrine, the purification trough (temizuya) where visitors purify their bodies and minds is unique. Here, water flows from the mouth of a white snake holding three bags inscribed with the characters for "happiness," "fortune," and "wealth." Just purifying your hands and mouth with the water flowing from this elegant white snake is enough to feel the benefit of increased wealth! In addition, motifs of white snakes can be seen everywhere, making it fun to search for them.

After visiting a shrine, many people make a promise to themselves to try an omikuji (fortune-telling paper). At Iwakuni Shiraheshinja Shrine, the omikuji is also arranged in the shape of a white snake, making it cute and adorable. The sight of the snake's head popping out from many holes with its red tongue sticking out is breathtaking and very cute. If you look closely, you'll notice that its tongue is also a characteristic feature. When you visit, be sure to try pulling one and receive a message from Shiraheshi-san through the omikuji.

As a commemoration of your shrine visit, how about purchasing goods related to the white snake? You can make a wish for good fortune on a cute ema (votive picture tablet) with a vividly colored treasure ship and a white snake coming from the sea, or you can take home a yellow shuincho (stamp book) with a white snake design along with your shuin (temple or shrine stamp). You can also purchase an omamori (amulet) to protect you even after returning home and savor the afterglow, which is one of the joys of traveling.
