This tradition has been passed down and has become a symbolic event of Atami.

Hashiriyu (Running Hot Spring)

走り湯Hashiri-yu is a rare horizontal cave-type spring in Japan and is a famous spot known as one of the three great ancient springs of Japan. It is named Hashiri-yu (running water) because the water that springs from the mountains flows down to the coast as if it is flying.

Facing the Sagami Sea, Hashiri-yu was discovered about 1,300 years ago. Before the Meiji era, this place was a rare hot spring that gathered faith as the sacred bath of the Izu-Yama Shrine. Minamoto no Sanetomo also praised its fame by composing, ‘The swift waters that emerge from the mountains of Izu Province are a sign of the gods.

Even now, from the 5-meter-deep cave of Hashiri-yu, 170 liters of 70-degree Celsius water gush out every minute. You can hear the sound of the spring erupting amidst intense steam. Although you cannot directly bathe in these waters, nearby hotels offer baths using the spring water from Hashiri-yu.

Kinomiya Shrine

来宮神社Kinomiya Shrine in Atami is a famous spot known for bestowing blessings of health, longevity, and the fulfillment of wishes. It is revered as the deity of the land in Atami and worshipped for bringing fortune and good luck.

The shrine gained prominence when, in the early Heian period, Sakagami Tamuramaro, a notable figure, prayed here for victory in battles. He enshrined the spirit of the deity in various places across the country. This act of devotion led to the belief that the shrine protects the local people and travelers, drawing many visitors to Atami for worship.

The shrine also hosts various annual events, including the Don-yaki  Festival for health and longevity and the Ooharae Shrine Tag Burning Festival on New Year’s Eve, among other seasonal activities. On New Year’s Day, approximately 100,000 visitors come to the shrine, and the precincts become lively with the addition of various stalls.

来宮神社

Kinomiya Shrine is also known as one of Japan’s leading power spots. The giant camphor tree within the shrine grounds is brimming with life force and has become a symbolic presence for those wishing for health, longevity, and the fulfillment of their heart’s desires.

This sacred tree, over 2,000 years old, has a circumference of about 24 meters, presenting an impressive sight. Its scale is so notable that it was recognized as the second-largest tree in Japan by the Ministry of the Environment in 1992. Furthermore, there is a legend that walking around the trunk of this giant camphor tree with a wish in your heart will extend your life by one year. Hatsushima

食堂街From Atami Port, take a ferry to Hatsushima, and located just near the port is the dining district. Here, local fishermen operate eateries where you can enjoy fresh local seafood caught that morning.

The seafood, freshly caught by the fishermen who set out early in the morning, is immediately placed in tanks at the storefronts, ensuring the freshness and quality of the ingredients. As a result, the gourmet offerings in the dining district maximize the delicious flavors of the ingredients, allowing you to indulge in the delicate taste of seasonal delicacies.

In the dining district, there are about 17 eateries where you can enjoy a variety of dishes such as donburi (rice bowls) loaded with seafood, sashimi, and set meals with cooked fish. By purchasing a one-day pass (800 yen for adults, 400 yen for children), you can hop on and off at any of the 16 stations around the tourist spots as many times as you like. With 18 buses operating daily, you can move around smoothly. Additionally, there are discounts at various tourist facilities, making it a great deal!

On the bus, local volunteer guides provide information about Atami, enriching your knowledge of its features and history as you visit the sights.

Furthermore, from April 1, 2020, a new vehicle, ‘Irodori,’ was introduced. Access to Atami is fastest and most convenient via the Shinkansen.For the Hikari Shinkansen, it takes 35 minutes from Tokyo Station, 1 hour and 30 minutes from Nagoya Station, and 2 hours and 15 minutes from Osaka Station.

For the Kodama Shinkansen, it takes 50 minutes from Tokyo Station, 2 hours from Nagoya Station, and 3 hours and 10 minutes from Osaka Station.

The fare for both Hikari and Kodama is the same, costing 3,670 yen for unreserved seats and 4,190 yen for reserved seats from Tokyo Station.

Express Trains are Recommended for Budget-Friendly Travel

There are two types of limited express trains from Tokyo Station to Atami Station: the Odoriko and the Rapid Acty.
